Is this a familiar question you've heard? To be honest, it's a pretty legit curiosity especially since it seems like the majority of therapists dream of opening their own private practice the minute they get licensed. However, I have discovered there are PLENTY of reasons why joining an established practice is more appealing than starting your own...maybe these resonate with you....
No one ever told you that having a private practice is actually owning your own business, and if I recall correctly, graduate school did not offer business classes alongside all of the psychology classes we were there to actually take. I would safely guess that 99.9% of therapists who opened a private practice learned the hard way what it took; and while for some, it was exactly what they hoped it would be, for many others, the expectation didn't match the reality...for many reasons.
Unless you're active in a lot of networking groups or functions, private practice can be very isolating and lonely. A group practice offers a sort of "built in" opportunity for regular interaction. Everything from quick chats in-between sessions to team meetings, to team events, there is always a chance that you'll see a colleague around the office and feel the energy of a shared connection to the work you do. Being a part of a team also provides you with a feeling of being part of something bigger than just yourself, where collaboration, care, and encouragement are just a few of the benefits you'll experience.
Maybe you're ready to join a group practice because solo practice wasn't a great experience for you, or maybe you're at a point in your career where you only want to be a therapist and not a business owner....or maybe it's somewhere in-between. The great news is that no matter the reason, this is what is appealing to you and how you are choosing to be the best therapist you can be! I'm thrilled for you and so happy you're here and interested in becoming part of our Village.
I'm guessing since you've read to this point, something I said hit home and you'd like to learn more. Yay! I'm so glad to hear it. Below are the basic job expectations for licensed positions.
